ASTM C1074 vs Companion Cylinders: A Practical Comparison

Companion cylinder break tests have been the default acceptance tool for decades. The maturity method, standardised in ASTM C1074, is a complementary approach that addresses several of the cylinder's structural limitations.

This is not a case of one replacing the other wholesale — but understanding the trade-offs explains why monitoring is now standard practice on time-critical work.

What a cylinder actually tells you

A companion cylinder gives a reliable strength value — but for the cylinder, at the age it was crushed, under the curing conditions it experienced. Field-cured or lab-cured, those conditions differ from the structure's core and surface.

It is also a single point in time. To understand strength at several ages you must cast and crush several cylinders, consuming concrete and lab capacity, and you still only learn the result after the fact.

What maturity adds

Maturity testing measures the real element, continuously, from inside it. Instead of one number at one age, you get the whole strength-gain curve for that specific pour under its actual conditions.

Because it is real-time, decisions can be made the moment a criterion is met rather than waiting for a 7- or 28-day break.

Where each fits

Where break tests are mandated by specification or regulation, they remain in place — and maturity runs alongside as additional, continuous intelligence.

Where the goal is operational speed and in-place verification — stripping, post-tensioning, sequencing — maturity is the better-matched tool, and it can substantially reduce the volume of routine destructive testing.

Key takeaways

  • Cylinders give one number, at one age, from differently-cured concrete.
  • Maturity (ASTM C1074) gives the full in-place strength curve, continuously.
  • Maturity needs a one-time mix calibration; cylinders need casting and crushing every time.
  • Use them together: keep mandated break tests, add maturity for real-time decisions.
